In the opening period of a December 8th game against St. Mary's, the Wings had trouble getting organized, falling behind 0-3.
Regaining composure for the second period, hard work paid off and the period was won by the Wings 2-1 on two goals by John Mendicino.
The first of which was unassisted and the second was with help from Mike Lanciotti and Spiros Markopoulos. The Wings could not manage
the comeback in the third period and the game ended by a score of 2-5. Davey Logan faced 31 shots in the loss, but firepower was lacking
in front of him as the Wings shots totaled a mere 12. Throwing the puck at the net may be a viable strategy as long as someone goes to
the net.
The Wings played Syosset on December 14th searching for a victory. Coming out strong after some pre-game rallying by
captain Nick Greco, the Wings took an early lead. With just over a minute played Nick Greco scored unassisted. Before
his shift would end, Spiros Markopoulos would find him curling around in the slot for his second goal. The Wings
continued to dominate and two shifts later John Mendicino would feed Nick Greco giving him the hat trick. The second
period was less than two minutes old when a Syosset interference penalty would put the Wings on the power play. A puck
cleared up to the point found Tom Rossidis ready for the big shot and putting the Wings up 4-0. Tom Greco and Eric Diller
worked hard on the penalty kill late in the third trying to keep a desperate Syosset team off the board. With a valiant
effort to knock the puck out of the zone, Diller cleared the puck, was able to catch up to it and break in alone to put the
game well out of reach at 5-0. The defense corps of David Brown, Tom Rossidis, Joe Scalise, Tom White and Tim Moynihan
played a very solid game. Goalie Brian Johnston turned away all the shots he faced for his first win and shut out of the season.
Two nights later on December 16, the Wings were back in action again against Plainview. The fire from two nights before
seemed to have smoldered. The first two shifts saw the Wings fall behind by two. That seemed to awaken the Wings who then
started to skate harder and get a few chances in the Plainview zone. Unfortunately the second period would again start with
a Plainview tally. The Wings continued to play hard and the tandem of Tom Greco and Eric Diller would set up Mike Lanciotti
for his first goal of the season. Even out shooting Plainview 29-27, the puck would not find the net again for the Wings.
The final score would be Wings 1, Plainview 4.
The Syosset game shows that the Wings can win when they play three periods of hockey. Going forward, the Wings need to
concentrate on winning one shift at a time right from the opening face off.
