Strong Week For Varsity Ice Hockey

The Garden City Varsity Ice Hockey team kept their slim playoff hopes alive with two strong games this past week. On Wednesday, March 8th the Wings skated against Locust Valley High School. The only scoring in the first period was a Brian Kiernan power-play goal midway thru the period assisted by John Mendicino.

Bad luck for the Wings early in the second period, as an apparent goal by John Mendicino was waved off by the referee. Locust Valley then proceeded to even the score towards the end of the period.

Brian Kiernan put GC back into the lead early in the third period, assisted by Anthony Bitetto and Ryan Norell. Locust Valley scored midway through the period and the remainder of the period featured some great end-to-end hockey. Wings goaltender Jeff Greco had another outstanding game, making several key saves during the latter part of the third period. Greco finished the game with 34 saves.

On Monday, March 13th the team faced-off against Syosset High School. John Mendicino scored on the second shift of the game assisted by Tom Greco to give GC an early lead. Ryan Norell scored later in the period off two nice passes from Brian Kiernan and Michael Lanciotti.

Early in the second period, Ryan Norell scored an unassisted short-handed goal to give the Wings a comfortable three-goal lead. Brian Kiernan added a goal off a nice feed from Michael Lanciotti towards the end of the second period.

The Wings added three goals in the third period: Anthony Bitetto from Brian Kiernan; Eric Diller from Ryan Norell; and John Mendicino from Tom Greco and Joe Scalise. The real story of the third period was preserving the shutout for goaltender David Logan.

Logan made several excellent saves in the final minutes and finished the game with 23 saves. Great effort in front of Logan by the defensemen Tom Rossidis, David Brown, Anthony Bitetto, and Brian Kiernan.

The Wings successfully killed off eight penalties in the game. Forwards used on the penalty killing unit were: Eric Diller, Nick Greco, Tom Greco, Matt Gaudiosi, Aaron Kim, Michael Lanciotti, John Mendicino and Joe Scalise.

The Wings roster consists of Goaltenders Jeff Greco and David Logan; Defensemen Tom Rossidis, David Brown, and Anthony Bitetto; Forwards Max Auricchio, Eric Diller, Nick Greco, Tom Greco, Matt Gaudiosi, Brian Kiernan, Aaron Kim, Michael Lanciotti, John Mendicino, Ryan Norell, Kyle Seiferth and Joe Scalise.
