On November 22nd, the Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey team faced-off against Syosset High School.
In the first period Garden City was out-skated by Syosset. Garden City was able to escape the
period without falling behind thanks to the strong play of goaltender Jeff Greco, and defenseman
Brian Collins. In the second period Garden City picked up their game. Both teams were able to
generate several good scoring opportunities, but neither team was able to score during the period.
The tune of the game changed from a defensive battle into an offensive battle in the third period.
Forty seconds into the period, Garden City scored off a two on one breakaway with Ryan Norell blasting
a goal off a pass from Brian Kiernan. Four minutes later Aaron Kim scored off a pass from Conor Reeves
to give Garden City a two goal lead. Two minutes later Garden City increased the lead to three as Max
Auricchio knocked in a shot near the crease with assists going to Ryan Norell and Brian Kiernan.
Playing four on four with less than five minutes left in the game Syosset scored to cut the Garden City
lead to two goals. Syosset made it a one-goal game with one and a half minutes left after a long
scramble in the Garden City zone. With fifty seconds left in the game, Syosset was able to spring
a forward behind the Wings defense into a breakaway attempt for the tying goal. Goaltender Jeff
Greco played the deke by the Syosset forward brilliantly, making his best save of the evening and
kept Syosset from tying the game. On the ensuing face-off following a Garden City timeout, Kevin
Seiferth cleared the puck out of the Garden City zone. The loose puck was picked up by Ryan Norell
who knocked the puck into the empty Syosset net for his second goal of the game.
In the victory, good two-way hockey played by Conor Sweeney, Conor Reeves, Kevin Betts, Nick Greco,
Kyle Seiferth, Scott Mischner, Kevin Rice, Kevin Seiferth, and David Brown. Defenseman Brian Collins
had an exceptional game while going one-on-one against the top Syosset forward for most of the evening.
Goaltender Jeff Greco was the key player in the win, as he finished the evening with 30+ saves and
lowered his GAA to 2.58.
On Friday, November 26th, the Wings lost to Massapequa High School. Despite putting over forty shots
on net against Massapequa, along with hitting three goal posts, Garden City was unable to get a goal
during the evening. The only goal in the game was scored by Massapequa midway through the contest.
The lone bright spot for Garden City during the evening was the play of the goaltending tandem Tom
Hickcox and David Logan.
The Wings next game is Friday, December 17th against Hicksville High School. Game time is at 10pm
at the Iceworks rink in Syosset. Please visit www.gcwings.org for a complete game schedule or for
