On February 11th, the Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey team played the Christ The King High
School in an exhibition game in Queens. The Wings had the daunting task of playing on a larger
than usual ice surface, along with being without two senior defensemen. In the first period,
the better scoring chances belonged to Christ The King. Much of the period saw Garden City getting
familiar with the bigger ice surface and a much more physical style of play being allowed by the
officials. Garden City goaltender Jeff Greco was fantastic in keeping Christ The King off the
scoreboard during the period. With under a minute left in the period, Kevin Betts knock in a
goal, assisted by Ryan Norell and Brian Kiernan. The period ended with Garden City holding a
1-0 lead.
Garden City had a few scoring chances in the second period, but the majority of the better
opportunities belonged to Christ The King. Early in the period, the Garden City bench got
thinner when both defenseman Tom Rossidis and forward Scott Mischner were injured. Tom Hickcox
replaced Jeff Greco in the net for Garden City midway through the period. Hickcox immediately
was tested and made several nice saves. Christ The King finally tied the game with a power-play
goal late in the period. The period ended with the teams tied at one, but Garden City was called
for two penalties as time expired.
Garden City successfully killed off the two-man disadvantage at the start of the third period.
Early in the period, forward Conor Reeves was moved to defense to help the tiring trio of
defensemen Brian Collins, David Brown and Mike Makris. The teams traded scoring opportunities
in the third period, but neither team could get the go-ahead goal and the final score was 1-1.
It was a well-earned tie for Garden City. The penalty killing units were successful in seven of
the eight man-down situations. Great job playing the box defense by forwards Max Auricchio, Aaron
Kim, Ryan Norell, Brian Kiernan, Kevin Betts, Nick Greco, Kyle Seiferth, and Conor Sweeney.
Defensemen Brian Collins, David Brown, Mike Makris, and Conor Reeves did an exceptional job in front
of the net with the physical Christ the King forwards. Goaltenders, Jeff Greco and Tom Hickcox
combined for 36 saves and were outstanding for Garden City.
On Sunday, February 13th, the team concluded their very spirited intrasquad four on four tournament.
In game seven, Team Seiferth beat Team Reeves 2-1 behind Ryan Norell's two goals and the goaltending
of David Logan. Team Sweeney beat Team Seiferth 2-1 in game eight behind the strong goaltending of
Jeff Greco and the game winning goal by Matt Gaudiosi. Conor Reeves scored twice for Team Reeves as
they beat Team Sweeney 3-2 in the final round robin game.
In the semi-final game, Team Seiferth defeated Team Sweeney 7-1 behind Kevin Seiferth's four goals.
In the finals, Team Reeves defeated Team Seiferth 6-4 behind the strong goaltending of Tom Hickcox
and Micheal Lanciotti's hat trick. Congratulations to Conor Reeves, Mike Makris, Brian Collins,
Michael Lanciotti, Tom Rossidis and Tom Hickcox, as they earned bragging rights within the Wings.
Garden City's next game is Sunday, February 27th against the Hicksville High School. Game time is at
8pm at the Iceworks rink in Syosset. Please visit www.gcwings.org for a complete game schedule or
