On October 22nd the Garden City Wings Varsity ice hockey team suffered their first loss of the
season to Carey High School, 4-2. During the first period, much of the early action was in the
Garden City defensive zone. Strong work by defensemen Kevin Seiferth, Brian Collins, and Kevin Rice
limited the Carey scoring opportunities. Garden City goaltender, Jeff Greco, was busy during the
period and played well in limiting Carey to only one goal in the period. With about five minutes
remaining in the period, Conor Reeves delivered a big open ice hit on a Carey player. This seemed
to energize Garden City and eventually forced Carey to take a double minor penalty towards the end
of the period. Garden City was unable to capitalize on a four-minute powerplay and the first session
ended with Carey holding a 1-0 advantage.
Carey took a 2-0 lead early in the second period on an early powerplay goal. Garden City finally got
on the scoreboard a few minutes later as Brian Kiernan scored after some good forechecking by linemates
Ryan Norell and Kyle Seiferth. Kevin Seiferth assisted on the goal. Garden City had several other good
scoring opportunities during the period. Forwards Conor Reeves, Kyle Seiferth, Aaron Kim, and Nick
Greco all had quality shots, but were stopped by the Carey netminder. The second period ended with Carey
holding onto a one-goal lead, 2-1.
Garden City continued to put pressure on Carey in the beginning of the third period. Three minutes
into the period, Aaron Kim and Ryan Norell forced a turnover in the Carey end of the ice. Brian Collins
picked up the loose puck and slid it over to Brian Kiernan who scored to tie the game at two. The next
eight minutes featured end-to-end action. Goalie Jeff Greco deprived Carey on several good opportunities
during that time. With four minutes remaining, Carey scored the game winner on a blast from the top of
the face-off circle. With one minute left on the clock and Garden City trying for the tying goal, a
loose puck was picked up at mid-ice by Carey. This resulted in a Carey breakaway goal, clinching their
victory over Garden City.
Junior goaltender, Jeff Greco, played well and finished the evening with 23 saves. Fatigue again was a
factor, as Garden City played with a short bench. Defenseman David Brown was forced to move up to forward
for the game and did a great job playing an unfamiliar position. The senior trio of Brian Collins, Kevin
Rice and Kevin Seiferth all had good games, with each of them logging about thirty minutes of ice time.
