Varsity Ice Hockey Shuts Out Great Neck

On February 5th, the Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey team played the Great Neck Bruins in an exhibition game. The Bruins are a high school age travel team whose players come from the surrounding Great Neck area. A fast paced first period featured end-to-end action with both teams having several good scoring opportunities. Garden City goaltender, Tom Hickcox, made two nice saves midway through the period to keep Great Neck off the scoreboard. The only score of the period was an unassisted goal by Conor Sweeney. Garden City held a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

Brian Kiernan scored early in the second period, assisted by linemates Ryan Norell and Kevin Betts. Garden City generated several other good scoring opportunities during the period, but were unable to get anything else past the Bruins goaltender. The Garden City defensemen controlled much of the play in their defensive zone during the period. The defense is led by Brian Collins, Tom Rossidis, David Brown, Mike Makris, and Kevin Seiferth.

Garden City took charge of the game in the third period. Five minutes into the third period, Scott Mischner scored off a pass from Max Auricchio to give Garden City a three-goal lead. Ninety seconds later Ryan Norell blasted a goal off a pass from Brian Kiernan. Towards the end of the third period, Max Auricchio took a pass from Mike Makris and faked out the goaltender with a nice move to score the last goal of the game. With five minutes remaining in the game, goaltender David Logan made two good saves to preserve the 5-0 shutout.

Garden City benefited from a strong physical game from Kyle Seiferth in the offensive zone. Great effort and hustle at both ends of the rink by forwards Conor Reeves, Aaron Kim, and Nick Greco. Goaltenders Tom Hickcox and David Logan were sharp in the Garden City victory. In nineteen games, the goaltending trio of Jeff Greco, Tom Hickcox and David Logan have an excellent goals-against-average of 2.74.

On Sunday, February 6th, the team began their intrasquad four on four tournament. The squad was split into three teams via a draft. Conor Sweeney captains Team Sweeney, with Kevin Betts, David Brown, Matt Gaudiosi, Jeff Greco, Brian Kiernan, and Kevin Rice. Conor Reeves captains Team Reeves, with Max Auricchio, Brian Collins, Tom Hickcox, Michael Lanciotti, Michael Makris, and Tom Rossidis. Kevin Seiferth captains Team Seiferth, with Nick Greco, David Logan, Aaron Kim, Scott Mischner, Ryan Norell, and Kyle Seiferth.

With bragging rights on the line, the first two rounds of twelve minute games featured some very spirited play from all participates. In game two, Team Seiferth defeated Team Sweeney 3-2 behind Ryan Norell's hat trick and the goaltending of David Logan.
