This fall, the Garden City Wings Varsity ice hockey team will begin their 31st season in the Nassau High School
Hockey League. The Wings will bring forward one of the younger teams into the league with eight sophomores on
their opening night roster. Senior Captain Ryan Boelsen, Assistant Captains Gerry Diamond, John Iamascia and
Brendan Collins will be counted on to provide experience & leadership to a young squad.
Goaltending will be one of the team strengths. Third year Varsity senior Brendan Collins leads a trio of
formidable net minders. Junior Greg McNamara returns after a very successful 2002-2003 season. Sophomore
Jeff Greco moves up to Varsity after leading the freshman team to the playoffs last year. All three will be
sharing the workload during the upcoming season.
Returning juniors Brian Collins, Kevin Seiferth and Kevin Rice, along with sophomore Michael Makris, lead the
hard-hitting defense. The success of the team will very much depend on the defenseman's ability to control the
play in the defensive zone.
Up front, the Wings will be relying on aggressive fore-checking and strong positional skating. Seniors John
Iamascia, Greg Flaster, and Gerry Diamond will lead the opening night offensive attack. Juniors Conor Reeves and
Conor Sweeney with sophomores Max Aurruchio, Kevin Betts, Ryan Norell, Brian Kiernan, and Kyle Seiferth round out
the front lines. Offensively the team suffered a major blow earlier this month with an injury to high scoring
senior John Colan. The team is hoping to have him along with football playing Ryan Boelsen and Chris Breslin
back in the lineup sometime in late November.
Opening game is on Friday October 10th at 8:15pm at the Iceworks rink in Syosset, as the Wings take on
Carey High School. Please visit www.gcwings.org for a complete game schedule or for additional
