Wings MS Team Surprises Wantagh-Seaford

After two difficult one goal losses during the month of December, the Garden City Wings Middle School Ice Hockey team stunned the second place Wantagh-Seaford Baymen on January 12, 2008 with a 7 - 3 win.

Traveling to the Cantiague Park ice rink proved to be a good change of pace for the Wings. The first period started slowly until defense Mark Brady blasted the puck over the opposing goalkeeper's shoulder with less than four minutes remaining. The Baymen quickly responded in kind and the scoreboard read 1 - 1 at the conclusion of the first period. Brady, a seventh grader, tallied his second goal three minutes into the second period. Four minutes later he passed to sixth grade center John White who finished the hunt. Wantagh-Seaford scored again with three minutes left. Two minutes later seventh grade center Conor Gibbons skated past the Baymen defense in the neutral zone and scored an unassisted goal. The second period ended with the score 4 - 2 in favor of the Wings. The first ten minutes of the third period saw both teams engaged in furious back and forth rushes with forwards Matt Greco, Joseph Giarraputo and Tim Michel "on the doorstep" on several occasions. The persistent forechecking of forwards Conor Gallagher and Tyler Biscone forced multiple turnovers in the attack zone. Eighth grader Robert Tomao's increased confidence resulted in more than ten body checks. Jack Worstell's solid skating skills transformed him into a threat playing both forward and defense. Conor Gibbons' second unassisted goal of the game ended the third period stalemate. John White added another goal fifty seconds later with the assistance of forward Ryan Costigan and defense Mark Brady. With less than two minutes left in the game Wantagh-Seaford pulled their goalkeeper and promptly scored. However, an empty net goal on a pass from Mark Brady sealed the Baymen's fate and gave John White his first "hat trick" of the season. Seventh grade goalie Zachary Bostrom continued to improve his positioning in the crease as he limited the usually high scoring Baymen to just one goal in each of the three periods.
