The Garden City Wings Ice Hockey Club is now accepting players for our Middle School ice hockey team for the spring season (March 2012 through mid-June 2012). ALL Garden City students currently in grades 5, 6 and 7 are strongly encouraged to join our Middle School ice hockey team. Our spring ice hockey program includes approximately six to eight League and non-League games and about twelve practices throughout the spring season. The Middle School team games begin during April. Each game consists of three fifteen-minute periods of competitive, change-on-the-fly ice hockey. Body checking is NOT permitted during our Middle School games. Our practices and games are played at the Iceworks Rink in Syosset and the Town of Oyster Bay - Bethpage Rink. Our coaches emphasize teamwork, commitment and fun as players develop their skating, passing and shooting skills. Full ice hockey equipment is required at all practices and games. Our practice schedule does not conflict with the roller hockey programs conducted by the Garden City Recreation Department. To join our Middle School team for the spring season each prospective player is strongly encouraged to participate in at least one of our on-ice practices during the month of March. On-ice practices for our Middle School team will be held every Wednesday night during the month of March at 7 pm at the Iceworks Rink in Syosset. Parents should plan to arrive at the rink at least 35 minutes before the scheduled practice or game. There is NO CHARGE to participate in our practices in March and try out for the team. To request a written application or obtain additional information about our ice hockey programs, please visit our website: www.gcwings.org. Middle School team applicants should click on Middle School Coach and enter their contact information. GO WINGS!!

Wings History...
The Wings Hockey Club was founded in 1973. It began through the efforts
and dedication of Bill Newlin-Wagner who, with the assistance of Ward Doerschuck and Peter Gall, fielded a team
in the Nassau H.S. Hockey league during the 1973-74 season.
In the Certificate of Incorporation, the purpose for the formation of the team was "to teach and develop skills
in the sport of ice hockey among the youth of Garden City High School and generally encourage amateur hockey
in the community." Over the years the team has more than lived up to these goals, having competed very
successfully in the league. More importantly it has developed the spirit of teamwork and success in
many of the players that have passed through the program. Bill Newlin-Wagner put it best in addressing the team in its
early history. He said "the essence of teamwork is character, friendship, unselfishness, excellence
in skating, stick handling, and tactics. My modest attempts at teaching you were, and always will be, not only
how to win but also how to bear it when you lose."
Over the years the organization has been funded primarily from the parents of the players. In addition,
we had enjoyed the generosity of The Men's Association of the Garden City
High School. Without their encouragement and support we would have great difficulty in running our
program and we thank them for all their help.
The club currently participates in both the Middle School and Varsity divisions of the High School Hockey League of Nassau County, Inc.
The league comprises club and fully sanctioned school teaMS . Games are played at ice rinks located in Nassau County.
The program is open to all players in the 6th through 12th grades who live in the Garden City school district.
